Ludhiana is the largest city in Punjab and is located on the Sutlej River’s old bank, 13 km south of its present course. Once the site of a great battle of the First Sikh War, Ludhiana today is a major industrial center. Known for better living conditions, as far back as the 18th century, the city drew migrants from as far as Kabul. Centrally located on National Highway 1 which connects Delhi and Amritsar, the city is connected to New Delhi by road and rail.
