Dindigul Forts: 63 kms. from Madurai. Of all the forts in South India, no other fort has such colourful past dating back to three centuries as the Hill Fortress at Dindigul. It has survived the rise and fall of various Hindu and Muslim dynasties that held sway over this region till the Britishers took over finally. The hill rises almost vertically to a height of 340 metres. The fortress was built by Tirumala Nayakan of Madurai. The place is very popular among young mountaineering enthusiasts and also as a place of picnic.
